History

In November 2001, John Hopkins, Josh Holmes, Darrell Hawley and Martin Shoemaker met in the kitchen of Richard Irwin to draw up the by-laws for a new user group they were planning. They named the group the Great Lakes Area .Net User Group (GANG for short) and decided it would focus on providing educational and networking resources for .Net developers.

Irwin was appointed the first president and was succeeded the following year by Bill Wagner. Others, such as Patrick Steele and Richard Hale Shaw, later joined the original kitchen group and provided leadership during the early days. Many of these men went on to become officers of GANG, while others volunteered to help in other ways. Alex Lowe and Dave White of Microsoft assisted in securing a venue.

A trial meeting was held in January 2002 featuring a presentation by Martin Shoemaker. A few months later, Bill Wagner gave a talk on Garbage Collection and Memory Management at the first official meeting, which was held at the Microsoft Southfield office, where the group still meets today.

GANG was the first group in Michigan and one of the first in the country to focus primarily on .Net development. Soon, it would become one of the first user groups to join INETA.

Today, hundreds of members attend GANG each year to hear speakers from all over the world and to exchange ideas with developers from around the region. Presentations cover a wide range of topics that interest .Net developers - from details of the framework to the soft skills involved in managing projects.
